Statement
When I am out in the landscape I am aware of an energy, a vibrancy that pervades all things. Each item has its own sense of being. Outdoors, this sense of being appears to be magnified so that the forms in the land can seem to be alive. Standing stones have a presence, trees seem to be listening, and mountains have personality, sometimes like a brooding animal or sleeping peacefully, but always alive. Weather and nature, and sometimes man, have left their marks. My work is about these things. I make marks on clay and manipulate it, using earthy surfaces and glazes.
I am interested in making forms that derive from the landscape and contain something of this energy and sense of being. I practise from a studio at Dyce, a few miles outside Aberdeen at the above address. Visitors are welcome, by arrangement.

Statement
I work mainly in watercolour, oil and mixed media and also produce etchings and many drawings.
My work has ranged from an intense interest in the dynamic structure of the landscape and it’s affinity with the human figure. This I use in conjunction with my work to express ideas about spirituality, memories, living and dying, of echoes we imprint the world with unnecessarily by our relationships with each other and our need to reassure with searching for symbols and patterns in our lives.

was born in Nigeria
and spent many of his early years.

Kanita Sim - Born in Thailand, Kanita grew up surrounded by the vibrant colours of the Gorgeous Thai silks, which were produced in her parent’s Thai silk factory in Bangkok.
Kanita’s mother was a very successful colourist and this early influence of colour and fabric has had a hugely important effect on Kanita’s work.
Coming to Scotland initially to study English, Kanita found her way to Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen, where she studied textile design.
Some highlights of her career are:
Head designer for Design Thai, part of the Rockerfeller Group (Bangkok and USA)
Fabric designer for The Old Bleach Linen Co., Belfast
Woven Fabric designer for Higham Ltd., Lancashire
Interior designer, based in Fortrose, Ross-shire
Now living in Aberdeen, Kanita’s love of colour and her knowledge of fabric design can be seen in the pleasing compositions and subtle, often imaginative colourings of her painting, to which she has now turned full time. Kanita’s paintings also demonstrate a diversity in styles which she attributes to the two major influences in her life – that of her Eastern heritage, which blends easily with her adopted Scottishness.
